Scottish-born Sir John William McNee (1887–1984) served as an assistant adviser in pathology during the First World War. He did studies on trench fever and gas gangrene and performed the first autopsy on poison gassed soldiers in France. For his work, which improved conditions amongst the troops, he earned the Distinguished Service Order. After the war, McNee worked at University College Hospital, London, researching liver and gall bladder diseases. He later returned to Glasgow and established a research unit at the Western Infirmary. He was probably the first professor of medicine to have an animal laboratory and to encourage his staff to work on experimental pathology. During the Second World War, McNee became a naval consultant and published useful data on wartime afflictions such as immersion foot.
