Emma Brownlow was the daughter of the Foundling Hospital Secretary John Brownlow. She met her future husband, a theatrical singer named Donald King, through the Hospital choir. She exhibited her work over three decades until around 1877 after which she seems to have been forced to place family commitments before her art, a situation faced by many women artists of the Victorian era. The 1860s were a productive time for her, however, as she received a series of commissions from the Hospital, including this one from Lieutenant Colonel James Chicheley Hyde. Hyde was elected a Governor of the Foundling Hospital on 1 January 1862. He gave financial support to a number of projects in the Hospital, including the boy’s band, refurbishing the music room and purchasing instruments.
