A slightly romanticised view of a stretch of the River Eden, probably between Armathwaite and Lazonby, then popular with artists. The distant high ground is the western side of the North Pennines.

This may be the work exhibited by the artist as 'On the Eden near Carlisle' at the British Institution in 1858, no. 1.
