Richard (‘Dickie’) Hunter, anatomist and embryologist, university administrator and circus impresario, studied art in Belfast and Paris before pursuing medicine at Queen’s (1915–1920). He received the degrees of MB in 1920, MD in 1923, MCh in 1925 and a PhD in 1928. A demonstrator in anatomy at Queen’s (1920–1923), and at University College, London (1923–1924), he lectured in anatomy at Queen’s (1924–1937). He retired from medicine in 1937 and became secretary of the university until 1948. Flamboyant and of an adventurous spirit, he was deeply interested in the circus and promoted several in Belfast until he retired in 1959. In 1966, he came out of retirement to organise yet another circus, at Belfast’s Grove Theatre. The portrait, three-quarter length, shows Hunter seated, wearing outdoor clothes: a navy winter coat, navy wide-brimmed hat, bright red scarf and brown leather gloves.
