In this austere still life, Vaughan places the khaki and green forms of a group of pears on a grey table inside a darkened, almost black interior. The flattened treatment of the forms and the earthy tonality of the composition emphasise the sensuous outlines of the fruit.

During the 1950s Vaughan was strongly influenced by European artists such as Cézanne and Matisse and developed a distinctive style that resolved his interest in figuration and abstraction.
