It is unknown if this view is of a particular place or a composition from the artist's imagination. Either way, it is a romantic view of a Highland valley, with figures dwarfed in the vast landscape and contrasting light from the sun breaking through the rain clouds above.

The artist, John Milne Donald, was known for his landscape painting. Born in Nairn in 1819, little is known of his academic achievements, but he showed an interest in art from a young age and spent time in Paris and London before returning to Scotland. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts but his work was not fully appreciated until after his death in 1866.
