Owiti taught himself to paint at the renowned Chemichemi Creative Center in Nairobi where the director, Esk’ia Mphahlele, recognised his talent and encouraged him to travel to Osogbo, Nigeria. Here, he learned linocut printmaking and expanded his painting practice. His new expressive handling of paint can be seen in the thick brushwork used in 'Ostriches'. This work was exhibited, upon Owiti's return from Oshogbo in 1966, at Chemichemi where Mitchison purchased it.
Owiti's work has been exhibited at prominent institutions in Africa and abroad.
