Beside his role as painter, Gardiner was active as director of the Goldsmith's College of Art in London. During this period many etchers, the so-called 'Goldsmith's school', had been trained at the College, often specialising in landscapes. The treatment of this landscape resembles not only the style of Cézanne and Matisse but also recalls paintings by Friesz, in which strong, visible outlines and a patchy application of paint create a sense of space and atmosphere.
