The painting depicts the Bible’s account of what followed after the Angel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary that she was going to bear a child who was to be the Son of God. The angel told Mary that her cousin Elizabeth was also to have a child, through the power of the Lord. On hearing this Mary made a journey to the home of Zacharias and Elizabeth. When Elizabeth saw Mary, she knew what had been proclaimed and said, 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed among men shall be your son! And why is it that the mother of my Lord comes to visit me? Blessed is the woman who believed that the promise of the Lord to her shall be made true!'
