Campbell of Finab was intimately connected to the Independent Companies raised to police the Highlands during the lawless periods of Jacobite troubles. These companies were the predecessors of The Black Watch, which was formed in 1739. In addition, Finab took part in the disastrous Darian Expedition. He had one daughter, who married Major Duncan Campbell of Inverawe. Major Campbell was killed serving with The Black Watch at Ticonderoga in 1758. This incident is the subject of the ghost story made famous by a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson. In 1908 the painting was in Inverawe House in Argyll. As Finab's daughter lived in the house it is fair to assume that the painting was there from the time of his death until some date after 1908. William Aikman was a well respected Scottish painter from Cairnie, near Forfar.
