This head and shoulders portrait believed to be of Henry Thompson, MP, and Lord Mayor of York in 1699. He is wearing red alderman robes, a lace cravat, the distinctive Lord Mayor of York’s chain of office, and a full-length wig of brown curly hair.

The eldest son of Sir Henry Thompson, Governor of the Company from 1667 to 1672 (see also artwork YORMA 157). He inherited his father's estate of Escrick in 1683. He had already lived there for some time during his father's life, and remodelled the old house between 1680 and 1690. He died at the age of 41 in 1700.
