This is a half-length portrait of William Robinson, who was Governor from 1590–1591 and benefactor to the Company of Merchant Adventurers. He was also Lord Mayor of York in 1594 and MP for York in 1584 and 1589. His right shoulder is towards us. He wears red alderman's robes, a fashionable ruff and a black skull cap. On the forefinger of his right hand he wears a gold ring with a Coat of Arms of the Merchant Adventurers Company – this may have been painted on at a later date. The inscription on the panel reads: 'William Robinson merchant late of the Cittie of York Alderman deceased did give 40 pounds to the companie of Merchants adventurers to be lent to fower young men of the companie for five yeares and then to others accordinglie for Ever'.
