With hundreds of thousands of artworks by over 50,000 artists, the Art UK database may seem a little daunting. We are keen to demystify and decode art for everyone, and one of the major ways we do so is through publishing stories.

These stories explore different of aspects of art – from simple artist biographies or interviews to in-depth artwork in focus pieces, and from individual collection or exhibition focuses to fascinating features on varied subject matter.

Art UK showcases the work of underrepresented artists and champions diverse voices in the content it produces. This diversity is a strength – our mission is to democratise art, and so therefore we must speak to all aspects of society. This includes diversity in terms of ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, disability, and nations and regions within the UK.

As of 2021, there are over 1,300 stories on the site to explore, written by over 600 authors – from famous art lovers to expert curators, and from freelance art historians to full-time academics. As well as commissioning from our trusted bank of writers, we are always looking to diversify our pool of authors.
