The village of Puncheston is a small rural community which lies in the north of Pembrokeshire nestled at the foot of the Preseli Mountains. The current school at Puncheston was built in 1953 to address the need for a large building in the area which might be able to meet the need of a post war crisis, e.g. possibly to hospitalise casualties. It is the corridors that became the retired head teacher's inspiration to develop a gallery at the school. Whilst out in Canada teaching Welsh, the retired head teacher, Mr Alun Ifans, was waiting for a car to collect him following a lengthy train journey from Chicago to Michigan, and visited a Canadian Art gallery which was housed in corridors similar to those of the school. On his return to school he began the lengthy task of writing letters to Welsh artists to ask them for donations of art work, and so the Puncheston School Gallery was born.
