Paisley Museum and Art Galleries

Renfrewshire Council’s Paisley Museum and Art Galleries houses one of the largest municipal art collections in Scotland. The Museum holds the collections of Renfrewshire Council and the Paisley Art Institute Collection, held by Paisley Museum and Art Galleries. The painting collections consist of over 800 works. Paisley Museum opened in 1871 in a purpose built building designed by the well known Glasgow architect John Honeyman. The art collection has an emphasis on late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Scottish artists including work by the Glasgow School and the Scottish Colourists. The contemporary collection includes work by artists such as Steven Campbell and the Paisley-born writer and artist John Byrne. The Art Galleries in Paisley Museum contain a regularly changing programme of exhibitions some of which include works from the collection. A selection of paintings related to Renfrew are on display at Renfrew Museum and Town Hall. Renfrewshire Council continues to actively collect historic and contemporary art work. Not all paintings are on permanent display but can be viewed by appointment.
