Richard Thomas Pentreath was born in Mousehole. He was the son of Richard and Gloria Pentreath of Penzance. He received his early art training while working as a servant at Clowance, one of the seats of the St Aubyn family, and later as an attendant to Sir Richard Vyvyan at Trelowarren. He was a popular portrait and landscape painter, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy between 1853 and 1868. Many of his paintings are unsigned, but many of his drawings were produced as engravings and lithographs.
