This half-length portrait depicts Warrington artist Thomas Robson, seated and holding a palette and brushes. Thomas Robson was an important Warrington artist during the nineteenth century. He not only painted original pictures but also provided valuable examples of many of the old masters. The artist's mother was a descendant of the famous eighteenth-century painter and engraver William Hogarth and Robson himself knew he wanted to be an artist from an early age. At 19, he went to London and studied at the Royal Academy. He was for many years also assistant to Sir Thomas Lawrence, RA before returning to Warrington to continue his career among old friends. He died in an attic in Legh Street in 1871.
