This painting features one of the artist’s most studied subjects – the water wheel – and is an example of Austrian Impressionism. This artistic movement started in Paris and focussed on realistic depictions of everyday outdoor life. Unlike many famous Impressionist paintings which are filled with light and colour, this painting uses darker tones to create a more melancholy atmosphere. The river is fast flowing, the sky is heavy and a single lamp in the cottage offers the only source of light. Schindler was the son of a factory owner who had planned a sparkling military career for his son. Instead Emil enrolled in the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1860 and became one of the most respected painters in Austria. He died at the height of his fame, aged 50.
