Many of the Bristol artists sketched at Stapleton where there was a succession of decaying snuff and flour mills along the River Frome. This one is probably the mill known as Witherlays, which no longer exists. Francis Danby made a series of paintings inspired by the tranquil riverside scenery, usually including children at play. This painting was made on a dark panel and unfortunately, as the oil paint has become more transparent with age, the effects of light and shade have lost their sparkle.
