This portrait titled 'The Maniac' was presented by the Committee of Hanwell Asylum to the RCP in 1871 'into whose possession it came directly from Russia'. It has been suggested that the figure was inspired by one of the spirits of the damned in Michelangelo's 'Last Judgement' in the Sistine Chapel. George Dawe was a noted history painter and portrait artist who worked from 1819–1829 in Russia and became one of the most sought after society portrait painters in Europe.
