Together with 'The Execution of the Marquis of Montrose' (also in this collection), this painting was originally intended to hang in a corridor in the House of Commons. However it was found that the paintings, with their heavy gilt frames, made the corridor too narrow, so the artist was asked to paint the same subjects in fresco instead. This painting shows Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, who was executed in 1685 due to his opposition to the reign of James II, the Roman Catholic King of England. After Charles II was restored to the throne in 1661 Argyll was welcomed to court, however a year later his father, the 8th Earl of Argyll, was charged with high treason and both men were imprisoned and sentenced to death. The 9th Earl was spared.
