This small canvas holds a complex composition. Nelson's victory over the French and death at the Battle of Trafalgar were regarded as momentous events at the time especially as most of western Europe was under Napoleonic control. The exception was the general, reminding the viewer of the long tradition of giving great praise to those endowed with military brilliance.

Another version of the composition is at the National Maritime Museum, London. A preparatory sketch, paper mounted on canvas, is in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore. Another preparatory drawing for the marine sergeant, reclining on left, was in the collection of the late Michael Jaffé.
