In the foreground on the left sits a man dressed in a red waistcoat, surrounded by a group of about four children. One of them is holding out a hand to the man, who is removing a thorn from it. To the right of the group is a grazing donkey wearing a saddle. In the bottom corner on the right is a man; he appears to be on a lower level than the others, who may be on a small hill or slope. The background is one of bare, green land, and seems to be on a cliff-top, as beyond a line of rocks which run along the centre of the picture is the sea. Storm clouds are gathering, and there are several birds in the air.
