Fry’s work as an artist is generally considered less significant than his role as a supporter of avant-garde art.

His admiration for the work of artists like Gauguin and Cezanne is very clear from this brightly coloured painting. Individual shapes are clearly defined by a heavy outline. There are few changes in tone and very little use of shadowing or modelling of forms, emphasizing the two-dimensional nature of the picture surface.

He gradually moved towards a more conventional style of work where his use of colour was much more naturalistic and outline softer than in earlier paintings.
