Enoch Guest was employed by Great Northern Railway and lived on Cromwell Road in Peterborough. In the 1850s G. N. R. built 200 cottages for its workers, in the area now known as New England. The cottages had gas and access to a water tap. The living conditions G. N. R. provided were much better than elsewhere in the city.

Enoch Guest painted this picture for H. A. Ivatt, who was a locomotive engineer with G.N.R.
