Alexander Kellock Brown studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Academy and went on to exhibit widely in Scotland and England. He became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1908 and was co-founder and president of the Scottish Artists' Benevolent Association. He painted a variety of landscapes, some of which are held in leading Scottish collections such as Glasgow Museums.

This painting was an initial sketch for a landscape as Kellock has noted in the bottom left-hand corner.
