This piece is one of five known copies produced by the studio of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Mills met Joshua Reynolds in 1771, and was knighted in 1772. He was a friend of David Garrick and was present at his funeral, and was also invited to the house of the Thrales. Samuel Johnson described Mills as “in his prosperity civil and officious”. Mills served as a young officer in the army under Generals Wolfe at Quebec and Amherst at Montreal.
