Christened on 15th June 1608 in the parish church of St Mary, Ware, Sir Richard was the fifth son of Sir Henry Fanshawe (1569–1619) and his wife Elizabeth Smythe (1572–1631). On 18th May 1644 he married fellow Royalist Ann Harrison, and together they had 14 children. He gave all he had to the Royalist cause, suffering great hardships.

This is one of Dobson's finest pictures and is full of symbolism, giving an insight into the type of man that Richard was.
