Sir Henry Pitman (1808–1908) graduated in arts from Cambridge University, and worked briefly in a solicitor’s office before deciding to study medicine. After studying at St George’s Hospital and King’s College, London, he spent nine months as the Duke of Grafton’s private physician before being elected as physician to St George’s Hospital. Pitman held many prestigious offices at the Royal College of Physicians, London.
