Sausmarez, was born in Guernsey, the son of Reverend Havilland de Sausmarez and Anne Priaulx Walters. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1883 with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1881 he was admitted as a barrister of the Inner Temple and called to the Bar in November 1884. Sausmarez was a judge of various British courts in Africa and Asia, the Ottoman Empire and China and was knighted in 1905. Around 1920 he moved back to Guernsey where he took up his residence at Sausmarez Manor. As Seigneur of Sausmarez Manor and Cliatelain of Jerbourg, he held the office of third cup-bearer to the Duke of Normandy.
