Raymond Piper, one of Northern Ireland’s best-known artists, was born in London on 6th April 1923 and came to Belfast at the age of six. He attended evening classes at Belfast College of Art for a year and, after six years spent as a marine engineer in Harland and Wolff’s shipyard, taught briefly at the Royal School, Dungannon. He became a professional painter in 1948. Well-known as a portraitist, his portraits can be found in Belfast City Hall, the Ulster Museum and in numerous other collections. In addition to portraiture, he is a distinguished botanical illustrator and an authority on Irish orchids. In 1974 the Royal Horticultural Society awarded him a medal in recognition of his work; he was also elected a fellow of the Linnean Society, London.
