Half-length portrait of Smith, conventional and competent, with a distinctly old-fashioned look. The sitter is seated facing to the right in a three-quarter profile, posed a trifle stiffly with his hands clasping a letter. He is dressed in a black suit and white cravat and his grey hair, moustache and blue eyes are set off against a vermillion background.
