The Reverend Canon Professor Sir Frederick Arthur Gore Ouseley (1825–1889) is depicted at the piano when a child. Behind and to the right is a single column decorated with vines, while a second column on the left is partly covered by a grand curtain. The sky and landscape beyond frame the child’s head, which is well-lit and inclined to the left. Looking at the viewer, he wears popular children’s dress of the period, including a brown-red coat with white trousers, and a van Dyck collar. On the floor are a sword and other items which show evidence of his gentlemanly background. An open book rests near the foot of the piano stool. The work was painted for the child’s father, Sir Gore Ouseley, the orientalist and ambassador, one of the first directors of the Royal Academy of Music.
