The sitter was a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge; Professor of Astronomy, Oxford and Fellow Commoner, Wadham. He was then President of Trinity College, Oxford and foundation member of the Royal Society. He was Dean of Exeter in 1660; Bishop of Exeter in 1662 and Bishop of Salisbury in 1667. He was Foundation Fellow of the Royal Society. The portrait is based on one by John Greenhill at Trinity College.
