Born in London and brought up in Sheffield, Coe joined the Hallamshire Harriers aged twelve. In 1980 he held four world records simultaneously, and went on to win a gold medal in the 1500m at the Olympics that year. In 1981 he made three world records. At the 1984 Olympics he set an Olympic record for the 1500m. He became a Conservative MP in 1992, a Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1994 and a government whip in 1996. In 1997 Coe became Private Secretary to the leader of the Opposition, William Hague. He has served as Vice Chairman of the Sports Council (1986–1989), and been a member of the International Olympic Committee.
