A young woman, draped in neoclassical style clothing, reads to a child around whose shoulder she has her right arm; the image perhaps depicts the link between poetry and music. The title of the book is unclear. This painting was part of a programme of wall decoration for the entrance hall for the new Royal Academy of Music, built in 1911–1912 to a design by Sir Ernest George and Alfred Yeates. The paintings were removed prior to the official opening of the building. Located in 2004, they were the subject of conservation and were restored to the Academy on long-term loan with the kind permission of the Rosenholm Foundation, Denmark (Rosenholm Castle).
