Located in Old Whittington, approximately 3 miles north of Chesterfield, Revolution House is a former seventeenth-century alehouse, the 'Cock and Pynot' ('Pynot’ is a dialect word for a magpie). It takes its name from the Revolution of 1688 as it was there that three noblemen – the Earl of Devonshire (from nearby Chatsworth), the Earl of Danby and Mr John D’Arcy – met to begin planning their part in events which led to the overthrow of King James II in favour of William and Mary of Orange. This painting shows an early representation of the building. The figure to the left is thought to be William of Orange while the chair to the right is the 'Plotting Chair' which, according to local tradition, was used by the Earl of Devonshire at the infamous meeting.
