This painting appears to have been based on a rare sepia photograph of the Reverend Brontë, which once hung in the Temperance Tea Rooms, Haworth, together with a collection of other Brontë memorabilia. The miniature photograph, which went missing a century earlier, turned up in a box of papers at a Midlands antiques fair in 2009 and was later sold at auction by Sotheby's. Nothing is known of the artist of this copy, but it was painted some time before 1894.
