This powerful portrait was presumably done by an untrained yet confident artisan painter. On its reverse is inscribed ‘Parchedig Daniel Jones, Maesmawr Bangor/wedi hynny (?) o Lanllechid/efe oedd un o rhai a bregethodd gyntaf i’r Methodistiaid ym Mangor/ganwyd 1780’. Daniel Jones was born at Maes Mawr, Penrhosgarnedd, Bangor. He was the son of John and Gwen Jones, who were among the first Methodists there. He received little formal education and was apprenticed to a Llanllechid cartwright. At the age of 16 he was inspired by the preaching of John Elias, and began preaching to local congregations. He was ordained as a Calvinistic Methodist minister in 1823. His sermons had a directness and simplicity which appealed to his listeners and he was much in demand as a preacher throughout Wales and parts of England.
