The Sound of Sleat, the narrow sea channel that separates the south-east part of Skye from the Scottish mainland, has been the subject of many artworks. This abstract oil painting by the American artist Jon Schueler focuses on the mood, light and colour of this area.

Throughout his career Jon Schueler was particularly interested in exploring the colour and the mood expressed in nature, especially through the sky and the surrounding landscape. Influenced by the works of Monet, Goya and Turner, Schueler found inspiration for his own work in the isolated and often dramatic landscape of the Scottish west coast, where he spent three months every year from 1970. As Schueler himself said, 'I went to Scotland to live inside my paintings, to live inside the paintings I was struggling to paint'.
