Originally attributed to the Spanish School by Thomas Kay, 'Portrait of a Monk' has since been re-attributed to the Flemish School. A similar painting exists in the collections of the Prado, Madrid, titled ‘Father Cabanillas’, painted by the court painter to Carlos II of Spain, Claudius Coit. Resembling this work it shows much more of the monk’s cloak and is set against a landscaped background, while this piece shows a plain background and concentrates on the facial features of the subject rather than his attire.
