In 1758 the Regiment was granted the title 'Royal' by the King, in recognition of the Regiment's service. Though The Black Watch wear the Government tartan (commonly known as Black Watch tartan), pipers in Royal regiments wear the Royal Stewart tartan, as illustrated in this painting.
