Born near Sherborne in Dorset, Mews was elected scholar of St John's College Oxford. In 1642 he joined the force raised by the University for the service of King Charles I. He was a loyal soldier and was wounded and taken prisoner at Naseby, and wore a silk patch on his cheek to cover a war wound. He was Dean of Rochester before becoming Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1672. A good bishop, in 1684 he became Bishop of Winchester. He offered energetic resistance to the Duke of Monmouth at Sedgemoor. After the revolution he did not take much part in politics.

Mews was a master of disguise; he was wounded 30 times and on a Scottish mission had a narrow escape of being hanged by rebels.
