The London Bridge in this picture was the first to be built with stone and at the time of painting was already almost 500 years old. This painting is based on a drawing made by the artist on a visit to London in 1627. It is likely that this view was commissioned to fit into a panelled interior. This explains some of the proportional irregularities such as the height of the arches and the overstated bank-side. The location is made undeniable by the presence of the Tower of London, whilst the massive population boom experienced by the city in the previous century is evident by the expanse of houses built on the bridge. The convoy in the foreground – probably a funeral procession – adds colour and a sense of calm. De Jongh was born and worked in Utrecht but is recorded as being in Haarlem in 1630.
