Bologna University has a long tradition of anatomical study, which is illustrated unwittingly in this painting. It shows Mondino dei Luzzi, the professor of anatomy at Bologna university in the fourteenth century, in the anatomy theatre at Bologna with the écorché scuptures designed by Ercole Lelli in the eighteenth century. This painting is one of over 26 paintings by the historical painter Ernest Board that were commissioned by Henry S. Wellcome in around 1912 of episodes relating to the history of medicine and science.
