In 1900 Malcolm Macdonald enrolled in the Glasgow School of Art. He had been brought up in Stornoway with parents who were both from Uig. On completing his studies in Glasgow he went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He then returned to Lewis where he lived and worked until he emigrated to Canada in 1909. He was one of the earliest trained visual artists of the Western Isles.
