Henryk Gotlib was born in Krakow where he attended the Academy of Fine Art, before going on to study in Munich, Amsterdam and Paris. Between the wars he spent time travelling in Europe, his left wing activism having placed him in danger in Poland, he came to London in September 1939 and thereafter lived mainly in England. His work in the 1940s was influenced by Bonnard, but his late nudes, such as 'Lucinda', represent a world of greater anxiety and pathos.
