Hervey was the fourth son of the first Marquis and fifth Earl of Bristol and was Rector of Horringer and Ickworth in Suffolk and Archdeacon of Sudbury. At Bath and Wells he was diligent and judicious and he ruled his Diocese with tact and firmness. With his wife Patience he had twelve children. He converted the undercroft from being a storage room into the family dining room. Being keenly aware of the poverty of many in Wells, he founded the Cottage Hospital and gave the Bishop's Barn and the Recreation Ground to the local people.
