La Thangue was born in London and studied at Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy. His early work is very classical in style, and in 1879 he won a gold medal for his traditional type of painting. While studying and painting in Paris, La Thangue became impressed with the school of open-air landscape painters. These artists painted in the open air rather than in studios. They also painted in a more impressionist style. La Thangue brought this technique back to Britain. He gained a good reputation as a painter of landscapes and rustic scenes and was considered to be the leader of a group of painters in the late 19th century called the British Rural Naturalists.
