Jack Carnew was a well known member of the Bristol & District Tippler & Tumbler Society. He lived in Maple Road, Horfield, and worked as a decorator but his birds were his life and he and his wife never took a holiday. He won many prizes and this painting celebrates his pigeons winning the 'Best Average' for endurance flying during the 1923 season. Tippler pigeons are trained to stay on the wing for as long as possible and the world record today is 22 hours 40 minutes.
